Degree Plans Available With An AS In Information Technology

Monday, July 11th, 2011
An AS in information technology is going to be different depending on what school you get it from.  All schools have their own names for their courses and the content of those courses is going to vary too.  Here are some thoughts on the degree plans available with an AS in information technology.
What Is A Degree Plan?
Basically, a degree plan is just the courses that you plan to take and when you plan to take them.  With many of your courses you will have some flexibility as to which semester you choose to take them.  With some of your core classes that focus on your information technology choice, you will have to take the basic courses before the advanced ones that build on them but this is only to be expected.  As long as you get in all the required courses by the time that you plan to graduate, you will get your degree.
In this way, your degree plan is largely up to you.  To understand what degree plans you have open you just need to know what courses you will have to take and then you can decide when you would like to take them.  Again, remember that courses and course content will vary from one program to another but these are some of the basic classes that you will have to fit in.
General Education
Apart from your focus in information technology you will have to take a number of courses geared toward providing a general education.  You will most likely have to take some basic math, statistics, natural science, social science, English, and humanities courses.  These courses will ensure that your education is well-rounded and that you are ready to pursue a bachelors degree after you complete your AS degree, if you so choose.
Basic Education In Information Technology Related Courses
These more basic courses will be the ones that will provide the education that will be built upon in the next grouping of classes.  These courses will provide an introduction and foundation of information technology.  They may also touch on such varied but relevant topics like business, management, accounting, and business or information technology ethics.
Advanced Education In Information Technology Related Courses
Once you have taken all of those beginning level courses then you can move on to the more advanced ones.  This grouping of courses will really teach you what you need to know about information technology to be ready for entry level positions in this field.  Courses that are likely to be included in this group are the basics of networking, programming, multimedia web development, and database design and development.
The degree plans available with an AS in information technology are only limited to your imagination and the possible combinations of courses that you can create while still getting all of your courses in by your scheduled graduation date.  This is great news because you can match up classes in whatever way is good for you.  You can make sure that you take your most challenging classes when you have the time to devote to them so that you can get your AS in information technology as effortlessly as possible.
